About the Event
We are starting a book club!
Shala is partnering with the Lexington Writer's Room to explore the themes of health and spirituality, as well as the ever-important question of “why we are here.” We'll be reading books and having thoughtful discussions. Our conversations will be enhanced by all of your different perspectives.
Studies have shown that reading can help reduce stress levels, improve concentration, enhance memory, reduce loneliness, and even increase empathy. Reading books can open up new opportunities as it helps us to discover new ideas and perspectives. Remind you of anything? Reading and learning are tools, like yoga, that can help you find ease. Learning through reading and movement helps to develop your imagination and can even boost your confidence. Both help you to access a deeper level of insight and connection to the world around you.
This month we will read and discuss, When Breath Becomes Air, an inspiring and thought-provoking memoir of a young doctor's battle with cancer, and his reflections on life and mortality. I chose this book because I was so moved by the elegance of the writing, Paul Kalanithi's hopeful message, and mostly because he inspired me to reflect on the beauty of my life and to cherish the people I love.
From our reading and conversation you will gain insight into the connection between your physical, mental, and spiritual health, and discover the tools you need to be the most fulfilled version of yourself. The goal is that together we will explore the ways we can maximize our well-being and embrace our authentic selves.
Let's explore our beliefs and values together and figure out why we are here, together.
If you can't join us for the in-person discussion consider reading the book anyway. It changes something when many people are mulling over the same ideas. I must say it--when we are all on the same page.
When Breath Becomes Air is available at your local bookstores and at the Lexington Public Library, and online at Bookshop and ThriftBooks.
