a few thoughts about yoga...
to help you find ease
We come to yoga for many reasons, to improve balance, strength and flexibility, reduce stress, lower blood pressure, or lose weight. And all of those things will happen.
Sometimes people are hesitant about yoga because they aren't sure exactly what to expect or what is expected of them. Often people say to me, "I’m not flexible enough to do yoga." Good news: yoga isn't a competitive sport; there are no tournaments or races; there is no gold medal.
So you can let go of the idea that you have to look or be any certain way. I know yoga can be intimidating. When you make your goal this fixed idea of the ultimate pose with in an idealized form and you decide there is a way it should look, it is really stressful. Then this practice you do to reduce stress, increase flexibility, etc. just creates more stress.
But if, instead of making the way a pose looks the goal, you make feeling good the goal, healing will start to happen in your body.
And then your life. One of my teachers and the founder of Strala, Tara Stiles says, “We practice yoga not to get good at yoga but to get good at being ourselves.” This notion is what drew me to this particular practice of natural movement combined with yoga forms.
I like the idea of feeling good while I do anything. And if that sounds a little daunting. Don’t worry. All you have to do is practice slowing down, breathing deeply and feeling.
yoga at Ashland
We meet every Sunday at 11a.m. | June 20-October 10.
DO sign up for emails if you want to get info about pop-ups and weather cancellantions.
Slow down, breath deeply and feel. Join us for a free, all-levels practice on the lawn under the trees. Whether this is your first yoga practice or your thousandth, this is a great opportunity to be with your people in a beautiful environment with many people who love yoga and want to share it. Invite your people, share this and/or bring a friend. EVERYONE is welcome! Most people bring mats but a big towel works too.
What to Wear
Wear whatever makes you feel happy and free to move. People wear sweatpants and shorts, t-shirts and tank tops, loose pants and tight pants, and yes, some people even wear yoga pants. Layers are best because even when it's a bit chilly once you start moving you may find you get warm. Most people find it easiest to be barefoot but, if you want to wear socks or even shoes, it's your practice so you do what works for you.
